How to explain to daycare not to microwave bottles?

daycare
Amy L asked:

How do I explain to the daycare (a daycare that has been open for 20+ years and probably has been doing this for that long) that microwaving bottles is unsafe? I know 2-3 of the other moms breastfeed and I don’t know if they are aware that they are microwaving the bottles. Are there laws against this?
She is breastfed so I’m worried about the microwave destroying the nutrients and antibodies. I’ve always read that it is NEVER ok to microwave ****** milk.

I would look up the state licensing requirements for the state that you’re in. Many states will site the use of a microwave to warm up a bottle as a violation.

it is not illegal to microwave a bottle. It is recommended that it not be done as there are some people out there that may actually accidentally scald a child.

I microwaved ALL of my kids bottles – to room temperature – not to scalding. I made sure to swirl it around, shake it even, and test it before giving it to my kids and it was fine.

Personally, if you don’t want it microwaved then you should explain it to them, it is your child and they should respect your wishes.

    good luck.

Just tell them that you prefer your bottles be served cold because it preserves the nutrients or something (but first make sure your LO will take a cold bottle). My son is 9 months old and has always had bottles of cold pumped milk.

    I agree with Tiff W.

It’s not illegal to microwave a bottle. Some people, who lack common sense might not shake the bottles after wards to eliminate hot spots, but it’s not against the law.

BUT, if you do not want the daycare center to microwave you bottles, tell them so. BY LAW they have to honor your requests.

i dont think there is laws against it, but you can request it and they have to follow.
When warming a bottle in the microwave, you are not heating it up enough to destroy the nurtients or anything..

Microwaving plastic is not a good idea as it causes the plastic to breakdown faster and chemicals may be released into the fluid. The only bottles that should be microwaved are glass…

    some associated info, kinda…

It is not illegal or against the daycare license.
She’s been doing this for 20 yrs. I microwave bottles – but, you do it so its only room temp. I have never done it more. I’ve never heard it destroys nutients. They tell you not to microwave because it could be hot in one spot in the bottle and not the other – so, i shake it up , and test it on my wrist. by all means – if you are not comfortable – tell the daycare- but, don’t tell them to serve it cold like one suggested – because they won’t drink it! Just ask them to set it in a warm glass of water – I’ve also done that before – depends how hungry the baby is and how fast I have to be.
